Mumbai Indians have undergone a major shake-up ahead of the 2027 IPL season, mutually parting ways with head coach Mahela Jayawardene. This brings an end to the former Sri Lanka captain’s decade-long association with the five-time champions.
“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure,” Jayawardene said in a statement released by the franchise.
“Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of. I want to sincerely thank Mrs. Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their unwavering trust, support and friendship over the years. I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead.”Jayawardene oversaw three of Mumbai Indians’ five IPL title triumphs, guiding the franchise to championships in 2017, 2019 and 2020 during his first stint as head coach from 2017 to 2022. He stepped down from the coaching role in 2022 to become the franchise’s Global Head of Performance, overseeing its teams across various leagues. Former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher replaced him as head coach.
Jayawardene returned to the role after MI finished bottom of the table in the 2024 season. However, he was unable to replicate the success of his first stint. Mumbai Indians reached Qualifier 2 in 2025 before finishing ninth in the 2026 season.
Mumbai Indians will now have to find a new head coach with less than a month remaining until the November 15 IPL retention deadline. The mini-auction is expected to be held in Goa around mid-December.
